Nearer My God to Thee . . .
is my favorite kind of melody, kind of plaintive with sad lyrics that none-the-less speak with confidence that “out of stony griefs” and “by my woes” I’ll be closer to Thee. Of course, it is best known in popular culture as the hymn that was sung as the Titanic sank.
